First Look: Punchout

by Dave Bates on May.26, 2009, under Game Reviews, Gaming

A couple of weeks ago, I received a coupon from Best Buy that allowed for a 10$ gift card when I bought the Wii Version of Punch Out.

Glass Joe

Why not, I thought.  I liked the game when I was younger on the original NES.  I remember playing both on the home console and in the arcade.  I had fond memories of Glass Joe, King Hippo and of course Mike Tyson.

Wii has since, removed Tyson and replaced him with a character called The Disco Kid.  The game plays very well on the Wii console.  Game play seems to be the exact same as I remember.

The characters are styled very well, they kept the look.  The feel of the original game still remains.  There are 3 sections you have to play through on “Career” mode that has 4 characters to beat in each class.  Glass Joe is the first as it was before, and is very easy to beat once you get the controls down.

As with the controls, they let you choose how you want to do it.  Using both the Nunchuck and the WiiMote, using just the WiiMote and using the Nunchuck, WiiMote and Balance Board.

I tried to use the version with the Balance Board, but couldn’t get it to work to my advantage.  There were times when I turned one way on the board, but the game registered it going the other way.  I found using the standard Wii controls was the best way to go.

I also notice there was a “Head-to-Head” version of the game.  I have yet to try this version of the game and will play it before the final review.

The next day, after I first played, I found how out of shape I really am.  My whole BODY ached and stiff.  I will have to wait a couple days before going back to the game (or playing through the pain).  I believe this game will also help me get a little more fit, seeing as I do have some to shed.

Hopefully, within a month or so I’ll be back with a full review of this game.

For now, I recommend it to anyone that has a Wii and a love of the original game!

Final Review: Portal: Still Alive

by Dave Bates on May.12, 2009, under Game Reviews, Gaming

GLaDOS Companion Cube

GLaDOS Companion Cube

I bought the XBLA version of Portal a few months back.  Well okay, maybe more.  I had heard a lot of  hype about the game, but couldn’t really figure out why people liked it so much.  Was it the nefarious references to cake?  Was it the cuddly companion cubes that I saw all over the Internet?

So I dropped the coin and downloaded Portal.  After learning the basics of portal I was hooked.  Granted, I’m not the best at this game, I had a couple of times I couldn’t think spatially.

There were a few times, I needed a hint from an anonymous source on the Internet.. but only in a few of the areas.. The game became extremely addictive when I did play, and I was forced to leave it from time to time.  The game had a wonderfully fun game play, but looks to have limited replay value.

The game was a lot of fun and did keep me entertained, and the final credits were the best part of the game.  GLaDOS was extremely entertaining too.

I would definitely recommend this game to anyone.  It wasn’t too hard, but it wasn’t so easy that it wasn’t enjoyable.  I think maybe in a few months I may go back and play some more.  I also will plan on doing the challenge maps to try and get some more achievements.  There are some achievements that I KNOW I won’t be able to get.. but that’s okay.. :)

TCR ‘Hair’: Review

by Dave Bates on May.05, 2009, under Show Review, TCR

TCR's HAIR

TCR's HAIR

Many people, that know that I work for TCR, ask me.. “What do you think of the show.”

My common response is, “I let everyone make up their own decision, I don’t rate shows.”  The reason I usually tell people this is that, most shows are so-so and just because I don’t like ‘em, doesn’t mean that others won’t.  So I try to make sure that everyone makes up their OWN mind.

This show, however, I have to put in my two cents.  Hair as a show I’ve never seen, I’ve seen bits and pieces of the movie, but it never compelled me to watch it any further.

For those of you who don’t know, HAIR is a show about Hippies, drugs, love and war.  Very appropriate for the time it was create, the last 60′s.

From the time I heard that HAIR was going to be performed at TCR, I’ve wanted to do it.  However with several problems throughout the year, I fell out of TCR’s volunteer pool for a few months, and was unsure if I’d be able to run the show.  Luckily I was allowed in to be the LBO for this show.   I’ve had a lot of fun on this show.  The songs are done very very well with G and his band, and the cast.  They are having a lot of  fun with the show and it does come off that way.  I do wish that I was working ON stage, but the lights are just as fun.  There are a lot of light cues and it’s a lot of fun.

I would recommend that EVERYONE go and see this show, if not see it twice.  This is an awesome show and the cast deserves high praise for how they are playing the show.

The stage has been reworked, went from a flat stage to a raked stage as it did in theatre’s past.  When walking on this stage, it’s pretty hard to keep your balance and the cast does well dancing on the raked stage.

I have got to say, this has been the most fun  I’ve had on a TCR show in a very long time.  The cast is wonderful, the camaraderie is awesome and the show is BOSS.. SEE IT!

Things on my mind 04/29/2009

by Dave Bates on Apr.29, 2009, under Flood Recovery, General News

Once again, been a couple of weeks.

The house is coming together nicely, we have mostly everything done.  We are just trimming up the the house with the old refinished trim.  It’s looking like home again.  There are people down the street working on a house, seems that today they have finished their drywall.. which means they don’t have much left for them to do.

PennyArcade

Downloaded a new game on XBLA, been playing it for a little while, seems to be a pretty neat game..  I hope to actually finish it and have lots of fun with it.

I’ve been, also, working with Chris Pirillo, but due to work and theatre have had to put that on hold for a couple of weeks as that gets sorted out.

Speaking of Theatre, TCR has announced their new season.. Looks to be a promising season, as well they are planning to be BACK in the theatre building by this time next year.  I’m am really looking forward to getting back in there.

We are currently working on hair, it’s been loads of fun and the cast is awesome..
Here are some spy shots (shhh.. don’t tell anyone):

Coming up in the next few weeks, I have a knitting project I’m trying to get done, (two actually) get to meet up with some friends, get to do some new programming in rails.. It hopes to be a interesting May and I hope to blog more often as things happen.
